Thanks to grants from War Memorials Trust and The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass work has begun on the conservation and restoration of the First World War Memorial Window of the former St. Matthew’s church which Giroscope purchased late last year.
The work is being carried out at the renowned Barley Studio near York under the guidance of glass conservator Alison Gilchrist, working with glass painters Charlotte Roden and Anne-Catherine Perreau and glaziers Daniel Thomas and Aurélie Haugeard. Their skills are quite remarkable, with new glass being made to replace lost pieces, and repainted to match the near 100 year old original.
We are looking to reinstate the window back at St. Matthew’s towards the end of the summer/early autumn if all goes to plan! You can see more images from the conservation here.
