Giroscope’s cooking project, based at Kitchen 23, helps people build the confidence and practical skills needed for a career in hospitality, creating real pathways into work through hands-on experience.
Through a 10-week bespoke training programme, young people facing barriers to employment learn a range of techniques in a professionally equipped kitchen.
The course promotes better nutritional awareness and broadens participants’ exposure to a range of delicious, non-processed foods cooked from scratch, building skills to support employability.
As part of a small cohort, and with support from expert staff, participants develop resilience, communication skills and the self-confidence needed to thrive in a catering role.
They are also supported to gain qualifications in Food Hygiene and First Aid, strengthening their progression into work.
Kitchen 23 also offers opportunities for regular volunteering and the chance to progress to catering for real events at the St. Matthew’s Community Enterprise Centre. This helps people build experience in a real working environment.
The course is supported by Two Ridings and the Betty’s and Taylor’s Foundation, whose investment helps create opportunities and skills pathways for local people.
This work forms part of Giroscope’s wider approach to neighbourhood renewal: improving places while creating opportunity for the people who live there.
