40 years of radical ideas and real connections

Welcome to our year-long anniversary programme

2026 marks punk’s 50th anniversary of rebellion, creativity and raw energy. This year we are celebrating 40 years of radical ideas, DIY spirit and neighbourhood renewal, with a year-long programme of creativity, discussions and celebrations.

Founded in 1986, Giroscope has played a pivotal role in transforming inner-city neighbourhoods across Hull. Over four decades, we have brought hundreds of empty homes back into use, delivered affordable housing, supported social enterprise, and created commercial and community spaces rooted in local need.

As Giroscope enters its fifth decade, it continues to place people at the heart of our work

Our anniversary programme is built around the theme ‘Radical Ideas. Real Connections’, bringing together tenants, social businesses, investors, partners, volunteers and staff to celebrate past achievements and explore future opportunities for collaboration and investment.

“When Giroscope began 40 years ago, the radical idea was simple: that neglected buildings and neglected people could both be given a future. From the earliest days, with a strong DIY ethos, we focused on supporting enterprise and helping people gain skills, confidence and a sense of purpose, alongside improving housing and the wider physical environment. Over the years, we’ve delivered better homes, commercial spaces and community assets, but bricks and mortar are only part of the story. The real connections between neighbours, businesses, tenants, volunteers and partners are what make change stick".

The Giroscope 40 programme reflects the organisation’s ambition to expand its housing portfolio, develop new enterprise spaces, improve energy efficiency and explore innovative investment models while continuing to put people at the centre of regeneration.

Events will take place throughout 2026 across Hull and beyond, with opportunities for the public, partners and investors to get involved.
