The UK generates around 6 million tonnes of electronic waste each year, yet only about one-third is properly recycled. Millions of devices, including an estimated 25 million mobile phones annually, are thrown away despite often still being usable.
When discarded, electronics can release toxic substances like lead and mercury into the environment, while also wasting valuable materials such as gold and copper. Through working with older technology, we know that we can reduce landfill waste, cut carbon emissions, conserve natural resources, and help ensure more people have access to affordable technology.
Here at GiroTech, we practice what we like to call the other three R’s – refurbish, repair and recycle.
We refurbish old computers and phones that are donated to us by individuals or companies. We then put up for sale at a lower price than new, or we donate them to people who would otherwise face digital exclusion.
We also offer a repair service to people who want to keep their device. Our in-house technicians can diagnose any faults quickly and provide the device back as good as new, if not better!
The third R is something we are very proud of… recycling, not just the components that we save from going into the landfill and thus helping to protect the environment, but repurposing the systems, giving them a second life when otherwise they may have been discarded or seen as too old.
It's not just tech we care about, although that is a big part of our work - we also care about the human side. We offer the chance for people to volunteer where they can learn new skills and gain valuable work experience in a relaxed and understanding environment. We also take people through the online-based ‘Learn My Way’ programme so those taking part can brush up on their digital skills at their own pace. We firmly believe that no-one should be left behind in the digital age.
